Re: kalyan's suggestions for women rights and safety

All,

I just wanted to give my 2cents on reservations:
The concept of reservations came into being since it was found that one section of the society was being disadvantaged, meaning that they did not have access to good education and therby a goodlife. In America the Equal Employment Act is a rough equivalent and its intention of passing was to uplift the lower sections of the societiy who were found to be severely discriminated. I don't think we can never peg certain people to do certain jobs. I agree with Chandu. That idea is just outdatedmand totally irelevant in this modern society.
But unfortunatley as, it is customary in India, the reservation system has been totally abused with the result that now we find rich people from the so-called backward communties getting undue advantage while the poor of the so-called forward communties suffering. So we need a system which would equate this. The way to do it is rigorous application of the law and to have an economic reservation system coupled with a merit sytem (as someone pointed in this discussion earlier). People found to abuse this would be penalised severly. Unless a fundamental shift comes in with the attitude of people being afraid of the law, no matter what good policies or ideas adminstrators come up with, they will be of no use since these policies can be made ineffective by anyone in power.

Just my 2 cents.
Regards,
-Murali

Interesting. Does this mean Venkat is ok with creating a list of jobs (specific jobs) and allow them to be filled with some people who need help (specific people)?  Is it not  how the classic caste system came into being? Venkat, are you suggesting a new "caste" system to replace the classic one?

By the way, who gets to decide which are hard jobs and which are soft jobs?
How you will define a "professional"? Does your proposal imply that professionals are required only in the fields of engineering, medicine, software etc?

No doubt we all have good intentions of helping the economically/socially disadvantaged folks among us. I guess, the difficulty is in figuring out how best to achieve this goal. Having reservations is definitely one of the options, but our experience shows that the existing policies/procedures around it are not helping the really needy.

There are definitely other options like making sure that everyone gets good skills, by making sure that the needy be provided with the economic means to acquire them. Some people further argue that, provide the economic means and rest of it be merit based.

I think whatever means we choose we need to bind them with time/generational limits and assess the results based on the outcomes and make necessary adjustments periodically (?).

One last thing, we have been increasing the quotas of reservations from the original limits suggested by the Constitution. How come more people need help after almost 60 years of independence? Which way we are headed as a country?

Your ideas are always welcome!

Chandu

I agree with Jagan , Still If Govt want or need to help some people by reservation, Govt need to categorize the jobs, Really highly professional jobs (Doctors, Engineers, software, teachers ) and RANKED jobs should not have any reservations only merit people (students) should get these jobs, like accountents, hard work jobs they can have reservations, It will be helpful to the country to the poor.

Venkat.

I want to comment on point 9.

Every Govt is supporting Minorities, BC, SC/ST. Giving scolorships, reservations and all. Are they no financially backward people in OC?
If a political leader talks like he will be suspended from his party I am sure about this.

To get scolorships or fee excemptions 1.Economical position, 2.Sex,3. Physical Disability  should be the criteria. Neither caste nor religion.

To get a job  1.Merit 2.Physical Disability should be the criteria but not 1.Caste, 2.Religion, 3.Economical Position, 4.Sex.
